What started as a custody exchange between two grandmothers quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire with a police officer in North Texas earlier this week.

Janice Brown, 53, and Carla Hawkins, 55, met in the parking lot of a Dallas Walmart around 5:30 Sunday to transfer custody of their grandchild.

At some point, an argument broke out and Brown pulled a gun. She reportedly shot Hawkins in the neck, leaving the woman with non-life threatening injuries.

To make things worse, Brown allegedly fired shots at an off-duty Fannin County deputy responding to the disturbance. The deputy returned fire. Fortunately, no one was injured in that exchange.

Brown was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant for firing upon the deputy. Charges for the assault on the other woman are pending, as the case has been referred to a grand jury.
