Burned Body Found in Belton Appears to Have Been Shooting Victim

Investigators say human remains found after a brush fire in Belton earlier this week appear to belong to a shooting victim.

According to a report from Alex Cano with our news partner, KWTX, an autopsy revealed two bullet wounds in the deceased's head.

KWTX reported Monday that the remains were found following a routine extinguishing of a brush fire just off FM 1670 near U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 west of Belton. Firefighters were able to control the blaze quickly. When they returned to the scene of the fire to put out a hot spot, they stumbled upon human remains.

According to investigators, the body was badly burned and authorities are currently unable to determine whether the victim is male or female.

A vehicle towed from the scene is believed to be tied to the investigation. Drug activity has also been known to occur in the area, which police have dubbed "the compound".

Investigators are saying they believe foul play is involved and that the investigation is "being worked as a murder," said Bell County Sheriff’s Department representative Maj. T.J. Cruz.

DNA and dental records will be used to help identify the burned body. The Bell County Sheriff's Department will provide updates as they become available.
