Before July 13th, 1985 U2 was a band known to a good chunk of the populace, but after a billion people tuned in for Live Aid he was the mullet known 'round the world.

U2 is like tequila.  You know you shouldn't like it.  You know you've been down this road before and it's not going to end well.  Yet, every time U2 opens another bottle, I drink it up like it's the last bottle left on the planet.  I can't explain it.  Every fiber of my being wants to hate and ignore U2, but I just can't.  The music they put out is still relatively decent, there's at least one song per album that hooks me.

In the 30 years since the world met U2 at Live Aid, Bono has gone from a noun to a verb.  He's become the Mother Teresa of the music biz (sorry, Kanye), and he's easily done as much off the stage as he's accomplished on it.  He's used his stage as a soapbox for issues & causes, and love him or loathe him, at least he's spending his time for good and not for cocaine addiction.

Look back at U2's moment in the sun
